Wayne Rooney DROPPED by Louis van Gaal for Man United’s clash with Stoke
Louis van Gaal has dropped Wayne Rooney to the bench for Manchester United’sclash with Stoke City.
The Red Devils skipper has been in poor form throughout the season and Van Gaal has finally lost patience with a player he deemed undroppable at the start of his spell as Old Trafford boss.
Rooney, 30, has scored just two Premier League goals all season and hasn’t found the net for United since heading the winner in the Champions League win over CSKA Moscow on 3 November.
Starting instead of Rooney is fan favourite Ander Herrera.
Van Gaal said: “It is our game plan.
“It is not a drastic measure, it is my gameplan. That’s for us, not for you! We have done everything we can do, I have seen a fantastic attitude of my players so I fully believe in this game.
“The conditions are the main factor but we have to cope with it. You can say that you don’t like wind but you have to cope with it.”
There are no other changes to the line-up which started last weekend’s dismal 2-1 home defeat by Norwich.
United go into the Boxing Day clash at the Britannia Stadium desperate to end a run of six games without a win.
After consecutive defeats to Wolfsburg, Bournemouth and Norwich, manager Van Gaal is under immense pressure to turn the team’s fortunes around with speculation surrounding his job safety refusing to go away.
